What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

With intrauterine insemination (also referred to as artificial insemination), specially prepared sperms are placed directly into a woman’s uterus around the time of ovulation. By eliminating the path that sperms would normally take to the uterus, there is a better chance that more sperms will make their way to the egg(s) and pregnancy will occur.

IUI vs. IVF

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a simple procedure that places sperms in the reproductive tract. In vitro fertilization (IVF) combines the sperm and egg (making an embryo), and the embryo is replaced in the uterus for implantation. Unsuccessful IUI does not give the patient a poorer prognosis for IVF to succeed. Learn more about IUI medications.
